The Government has determined that the Sauce Viejo Aerodrome in Santa Fe will become an international airport, as part of the strategy to deregulate air service and promote "open skies" policies. Local authorities will be responsible for health services at the site.
Rosario Airport is the busiest in the province of Santa Fe both nationally and internationally, with flights to destinations such as Panama City and Rio de Janeiro. The resolution establishes that Customs, Immigration, and Airport Security services will be provided by the competent authorities in coordination with the Sauce Viejo Autonomous Airport Authority.
Gisela Riuli, director of the Airport, indicated that the opening of international routes from Sauce Viejo will allow for competitiveness improvements in the air market. Currently, the airport only operates domestic flights to Buenos Aires with AerolĂneas Argentinas.
Located 17 kilometers southwest of Santa Fe, Sauce Viejo Airport reopened in 2018 after 227 days of work. Provincial authorities are working on the possibility of adding connections with Paraguay and Uruguay. The measure is part of the Open Skies Law to promote the operation of more airlines in Argentina.
The resolution signed by the National Civil Aviation Administration establishes the requirements for the change of classification of Sauce Viejo to international airport. With a 2300-meter runway, the airport has also been renovated with improvements in infrastructure for air services.
Furthermore, measures have been implemented to ensure a minimum level of air activity and to more rigorously sanction those who operate without authorization or provide false information to the authorities. These changes aim to boost the air industry and address the effects of union strike measures.
